Local and national health leaders are calling on people with diabetes to help set the record straight by sharing their stories, facts and videos to let others know the truth about diabetes.
Statistics show most of us know a friend or family member living with diabetes. Yet, it’s still hugely misunderstood condition with many myths and misconceptions – such as diabetes is a disease solely confined to people who are overweight. Hence the reason Diabetes Week 2016 (Sunday 12 June to Saturday 18 June 2016) has the theme ‘setting the record straight’.
Those with diabetes Type 1, Type 2 and other types of the condition are being urged to get involved with this year’s theme by speaking to others. This can be family and friends directly, or by sharing their stories through social media. You can get involved with the campaign online by using the hashtags #actuallydiabetes and #diabetesweek
Dr Paddy Hannigan, Chair of Stafford and Surrounds Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said: “This campaign makes local people aware of the different stories that help to fuel myths around diabetes, which can be unhelpful for patients. Generally, patients who have the condition want to know what they need to do to manage it properly, and if possible, depending on the condition, how they can combat it.
“Local healthcare professionals are here to help and can provide advice and guidance. In terms of Type 2 diabetes simple steps like making time to eat more healthily and exercise regularly can help to manage the condition.”
Stafford and Surrounds CCG along with neighbouring South East Staffordshire and Seisdon Peninsula CCG and Cannock Chase CCG are currently reviewing the support that adults with diabetes receive. There are engagement sessions planned on 22 June in Stafford, 29 June in Cannock and 30 June in Codsall. You can also contribute by taking part in a short survey.
Prevention and self-care two of the ways that can help to manage the condition better. People at risk of type 2 diabetes may be able to prevent it developing by making lifestyle changes such as:
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet
- Losing weight (if they are overweight) and maintaining a healthy weight
- Stopping smoking (if they smoke)
- Drinking alcohol in moderation
- Taking plenty of regular exercise
